1.         Meeting called to order at 9:00 a.m.

2.         Public/Member Comment

Richmond Brown, resident of Kearney Township, spoke on Mohrmann Park and the County owned forestland surrounding it.  Mr. Brown gave a brief geological description of the property and asked if the County owned forest area could be considered a part of Mohrmann Park.

Mike Crawford noted that this issue should be addressed further and should also be brought up at the next County Lands, Agriculture, and Forestry Committee.

Mr. Brown also noted that he was concerned about the ATV’s driving through Mohrmann Park destroying the paths throughout.

3.         Grass River Natural Area  (GRNA) Update

Joe Meyers handed out the GRNA update (attached).

4.         Parks Update

Eileen Wallick, Park Manager, updated the Committee regarding activities at Barnes Park (attached).

Ms. Wallick informed the Committee that visitors of Barnes Park are very pleased with the paving of the entrance to the park.  She also updated the Committee on the electrification project and the log building.

Ms. Wallick spoke on the end of the season aspects of Elk Rapids Day Park, Notewares Landing, and the Antrim Creek Natural Area (ACNA).

Ms. Wallick and Pete Garwood informed the Committee about a phragmites problem at ACNA.  Discussion about this problem ensued about how to deal with the situation.  Ms. Wallick informed the Committee that she has volunteers from The Master Gardener program helping.

5.         Wetzel Lake Update

Janet Person, Executive Director of the Antrim Conservation District, informed the Committee that there was no new news.  Mr. Meyers informed the Committee that he had spoken with Robin Pearson, Recreation Specialist for the Department of Natural Resources, who indicated that a meeting date has been set for November 10th for the appropriate State personnel to discuss the Wetzel Lake agreement and that we will know more after that meeting.

6.         Dredging Project

Ms. Person informed the Committee that the Conservation District is planning to get a regional dredging permit to dredge Craven Pond among various other locations in the County.  Ms. Person inquired if the Parks and Recreation Commission would like to be involved in possibly locating sites as well as perhaps write a letter of support for this project.  Ms. Person noted that she is working with Ed Martel, a County resident, to help secure a dredging machine that could fit on a pontoon.  Mike Crawford asked if we could revisit this issue next month.

7.         Barnes Park Grant Update

Mr. Meyers, per the Committee’s request from last month, presented the expenditures of the Barnes Park grant.  He noted that the fund was currently in the “red” by $3,574.83 with other expenditures about to be processed.  Mr. Garwood noted that the grant is a reimbursement grant so there will be times when it is in the “red” unless more County is temporally transferred to the fund.

8.         Parks and Recreation Update

Stan Moore updated the Committee on the events of the Parks and Recreation Commission (attached).  Mr. Moore noted that the information was just informational.
