1.         Meeting called to order at 10:00 a.m.

2.         Grass River Natural Area (GRNA) (report attached)

 

Mark Randolph, Director Grass River Natural Area (GRNA), gave an update on the most recent MNRTF grant application for property purchase at GRNA.  Mr. Randolph also updated the Committee on other land protection priorities he is working on.

3.         Parks Update (report attached)

 

Eileen Wallick, Park Manager gave an update on Elk Rapids Day Park and Barnes Park (attached).

 

Motion by Joe Allen, supported by Bob McLeod, to approve increasing the amount the county pays for firewood bundles, at Barnes Park, from $2.00 to $3.00 a bundle for the contractor.  Motion carried – unanimous.

 

The Committee reviewed a "customer comment card" that will be available for campers to fill out to provide feedback to the Parks Committee and park staff.  Stan Moore, Parks and Recreation Commission chairman will work with Ms. Wallick on the wording of the comment card.

 

Ms. Wallick informed the Committee that her crew has been at Antrim Creek Natural Area weed whipping and doing other maintenance this spring.

 

Janet Person, Director Antrim Conservation District presented fund raising ideas for Barnes Park.

 

The Committee was agreeable to authorizing the Halloween spook trail for later in October this year.

 

The Committee asked that the Battle of the Bands concept be developed more, and presented at the next meeting.

 

Winter Festival was discussed as a possible fund raiser also.

 

 

The Committee acknowledged that all proceeds from the fund raisers would be split between the ACD and Barnes Park.

4.         Barnes Park Grant Update

 

Peter Garwood, Coordinator/Planner informed the Committee the contract with Gary Bucklin as well as change order #1have been signed by all parties.  Mr. Garwood also indicated he was currently reviewing the specifications for electrifying the campsites.

5.         Wetzel Lake Update

 

Ms. Person informed the Committee that due to Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) rules: The DNR has to approve where the grill is placed on the Wetzel Lake property.  Additionally, all plaques recognizing donations must be placed on the picnic tables.

6.         Park Brochures

 

The 1000 brochures that have recently been printed will be used locally (at chamber of commerce, etc.) as opposed to placing them at State owned rest stops.

7.         Wetzel Lake Web Page

 

Ms. Person informed the Committee that efforts to get the Mancelona Schools involved in developing the Wetzel Lake web page have been unsuccessful.

8.         Parks and Recreation Commission Update

 

·         Parks Forum

Stan Moore gave an update on the most recent Parks Forum which focused on the shooting sports.  There were about 45 participants in the park forum.  Mr. Moore presented the results of an opinion survey conducted at the forum.

 

·         Parks and Recreation Database

Mr. Moore updated the Committee on the parks database.
