1.        Meeting called to order at 9:04 a.m.

2.        Sheriff Department Update

 

Sheriff Terry Johnson and Carl Goeman, Emergency Services Director, joined the meeting. Sheriff Johnson indicated the jail currently has a full house.

 

Chairman Larry Bargy briefed the Committee on the Community Corrections meeting on February 24, 2004.

 

Sheriff Johnson informed the Committee, an officer will be on Worker’s Compensation leave for a minimum of three months.

 

The snow mobile patrol has been working out real good.  This past weekend they worked the trails together with the DNR staff and the state police staff.

3.        911 Ballot Issue

 

Sheriff Johnson informed the Committee, the ballot issue for the 911 surcharge needs to be put on the ballot for November.  The Sheriff indicated the 911 Board is recommending the County ask for 16% surcharge for four years.

 

Motion by Dave Howelman, supported by Larry Bargy, to recommend the Finance Committee and the Board of Commissioners approve a ballot proposal of a 16% surcharge for 911, for four years to begin in 2005.  Motion carried – unanimous.

4.        Animal Shelter Update

 

Sheriff Johnson and Peter Garwood, Coordinator/Planner, updated the Committee on the Animal Shelter.  The inspector, from the Department of Agriculture, will be inspecting the facility at 11:00 a.m. today.

5.        De-icers

 

Mr. Garwood informed the Committee that he, Mike Crawford and Jack White, visited with Jason Allen and his staff as well as two employees of the Department of Natural Resources.  The trio was informed that legislation has been drafted and is in committee.

6.        Driving On Behalf of Antrim County

 

Mr. Garwood informed the Committee that he met with Legal Counsel regarding the policy.  After discussing the policy the Committee directed Mr.  Garwood to write the policy to apply to County owned vehicles only and to keep the policy very simple.
