Minutes

Members Present:

 

Don Schuiteman, Jerry Dobrzelewski, Russ Blasdell, Linda Gallagher, Stan Moore, Mark Stone, and Mike Crawford

I.          Call to Order

 

Don Schuiteman called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.

II.         Public/Member Comment

 

None.

III.       Approval of the August 28, 2007 Minutes

 

Motion by Jerome Dobrzelewski, supported by Russ Blasdell, to approve the August 28, 2007 minutes as presented.  Motion carried – unanimous.   

IV.        Boat Launch

 

 

Discussion ensued over the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy relating to the Torch Bay Nature Preserve.  The Committee discussed the deed restrictions on the Preserve.  The Board asked Stan Moore and Joe Meyers to look into the deed to check the validity. 

 

Discussion ensued over the DNR, DEQ, and the Army Corps concerning the easiest funding source for installing a boat launch.

 

Discussion ensued over the different locations of a boat launch.  

 

Don appointed the Boat Launch Committee including Gene Dawson, Stan Moore, Mike Crawford, Linda Gallagher, and Mike Meriwether.  Eileen will be helping staff that committee.

 

Discussion ensued over Barnes Park as a potential site.

 

V.        Petoskey Stone Festival

 

 

Discussion ensued over the Petoskey Stone Festival.  Mike spoke on needing to get to the corporate sponsors by October or November.  Mike, Linda, and Joe are to work together to get a write up to go to the corporations for sponsorships.

 

Linda spoke on getting more activities at the festival to attract more people.

 

VI.        Various Matters

 

 

Don Schuiteman questioned the status of the Wetzel Lake Lease.  Joe informed the Board that it would be going to the Parks Committee this month.

 

Don asked if we had any movement on the Park Forum.  Joe indicated that Mike Meriwether was checking into the feasibility of a forum and had not gotten back with his office.

 

Discussion ensued over Wetzel Lake.

 

Mike Crawford spoke on Hunting/No Hunting at Grass River Natural Area.

 

Jerry Dobrzelewski spoke on leasing the land at GRNA to an Oil Company and informed the Committee of the issues with directional drilling.

 

Gene Spoke on how oil drillers have cleaned up their act within the past few years.

 

Russ Spoke on Oil and Gas Companies.

 

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board want the Parks Committee to look very closely on the lease at the GRNA.
