Minutes

Members Present:

 

Stan Moore (entered at 1:40 p.m.), Don Schuiteman, Jerry Dobrzelewski, Russ Blasdell, Mike Crawford (entered at 1:25 p.m.), and Al Pecar

Members Absent:

Mark Stone, Mike Meriwether, and Linda Gallagher

Staff Present:

Joe Meyers and Eileen Wallick

Others:

None.

 

I.          Call to Order

 

Joe Meyers called the meeting to order at 1:18 p.m. due to a lack of a quorum, no official action could be taken.  

II.         Public/Member Comment

 

Joe Meyers updated the Committee on the Petoskey Stone Festival, informing them that there were currently 12 vendors and three sponsors.

Mike Crawford entered the meeting at 1:25 p.m., because there was a quorum present, official action could be taken.

III.       Election of Officers

 

Mr. Meyers opened the floor for nominations for Chairman.

 

Jerome Dobrzelewski nominated Don Schuiteman for Chairman.

 

Motion by Jerome Dobrzelewski, supported by Mike Crawford, to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Don Schuiteman as Chairman.  Motion carried – unanimous.

 

Mr. Meyers opened the floor for nominations for Vice-Chairman.

 

Mike Crawford nominated Jerome Dobrzelewski as Vice-Chairman.

 

Motion by Mike Crawford, supported by Al Pecar, to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot for Jerome Dobrzelewski as Vice-Chairman.  Motion carried – unanimous.

 

Chairman Schuiteman ran the rest of the meeting from this point.


IV.        Public Comment (continued)

 

 

Russ Blasdell spoke in favor of the County’s acquisition of the Sevald Property.

 

PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD RESOLUTION #01-07 by Russ Blasdell, supported by Al Pecar:

 

Resolution of Support of the Acquisition of the Sevald Property in

Forest Home Township, Antrim County

 

Whereas, public lands are essential in meeting the recreational needs of the community, and

 

Whereas, lands remaining in their natural state preserve the character of our localities and protect water quality, and

 

Whereas, the Antrim County Parks and Recreation Plan specifies the importance of the County’s natural resources and its effects on recreation and tourism, and

 

Whereas, Antrim County desires to manage its forest resources in contiguous large parcels, and

 

Whereas, the Antrim County Parks and Recreation Plan has as one of its goals the connection of its existing parks and recreational facilities, and

 

Whereas, the “Sevald Property” is 180 acres of scenic unspoiled land that would increase the recreational value of the county, and

 

Whereas, acquisition of the Sevald Property, provides important opportunities for public recreation; forest and open space protection; hunting, fishing, and trapping; and consolidates publicly-held land; all identified as important goals in a recent county-wide public opinion survey, and

 

Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Antrim County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board urges the Antrim County Board of Commissioners to acquire the Sevald Property, 180 acres of property in Forest Home Township sections 14 and 23 to consolidate the surrounding county lands.

 

A motion to adopt the foregoing resolution was made by Russ Blasdell and seconded by Al Pecar.

 

Upon roll call, the following voted:

Yes: Don Schuiteman, Russ Blasdell, Mike Crawford, Jerome Dobrzelewski, and Al Pecar 

No:   None

Absent:  Stan Moore, Linda Gallagher, Mike Meriwether, and Mark Stone.

Resolution declared adopted.

 

The Committee decided to keep the meetings on the third Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m.

 

V.         Approval of the January 18, 2007 Minutes

 

 Motion by Jerome Dobrzelewski, supported by Mike Crawford, to approve the January 18, 2007 minutes as amended.  Motion carried – unanimous.

VI.        Other Matters

 

Joe Meyers spoke on the Barnes Park Fee Subcommittee, the Wetzel Lake lease and the Parks and Recreation Plan. 

 

Stan Moore spoke on the mailing that could be done for recent Barnes Park campers indicating that we have reservations as well as the upcoming events at the park.

 

Motion by Mike Crawford, supported by Al Pecar, to have staff spend up to $500 out of the Parks and Recreation Printing and Publishing Budget to create a mass mailing for campers from the past 2 to 3 years according to the camper database.  Motion carried – unanimous.  

 

Mike indicated that we could get a hot air balloon for the Petoskey Stone Festival.

 

Don Schuiteman spoke on getting Shanty Creek involved with the Petoskey Stone Festival and snowmobiling.
