1.         Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Robert McLeod.

2.         Public Comment

None.

3.         Review of the March 6, 2006 Minutes

The Commission reviewed the minutes from the March 6, 2006 meeting.

4.         Fund Raising

Mark Randolph, Director of the Grass River Natural Area (GRNA) and member of the ACNA Endowment Committee, joined the meeting.  Mr. Randolph informed the Commission that he, Peter Garwood, and Joe Meyers had met with Jean Snow.  Mr. Randolph was involved in the meeting as a representative of the Antrim Creek Natural Area (ACNA) Endowment Committee.  Mr. Randolph relayed information about ways to fund raise to grow the ACNA Endowment.  The Commission discussed the possibility of fundraising, but in the end decided fundraising was not the appropriate focus right now.

Mr. Randolph updated the Commission on the status of the ACNA Endowment as of the first quarter of 2006.

Motion by Gary Strange, supported by Marion Williams, to recommend the Endowment Committee meet to address the issue of what if anything should be done with the temporary fund of the ACNA Endowment.  Motion carried – unanimous.

Mr. Garwood informed the Committee about the Management/Organizational Development (MOD) grant.  No action was taken.

5.         Grant Update

Coastal Management Program (CMP) Grant

Mr. Garwood indicated that we likely will not hear anything about the CMP grant until August or September 2006.

6.         Native American Place Name Map

Mr. Garwood informed the Committee that the Native American place name map is very difficult to install in the spring and remove in the fall.  Eileen Wallick, Park Manager, informed the Committee it would cost $55 an hour to have Signs, Letters and Graphics (the company that installed it) install it and remove it when needed.  The Committee decided to leave the map in place through the winter.

7.         Archeological Artifacts Display

The Committee had some questions about what conditions must be present in order to be allowed to host a display of some of the archeological artifacts found at the ACNA.  The Committee asked that Chuck Cleland, archeologist be invited to the next meeting to discuss how we can display some of the artifacts.

8.         Phragmites

Phragmites is an invasive species that has made a home on the northern beach of the ACNA.  Ms. Wallick informed the Committee she and some volunteers removed multiple bags of the tops of the phragmites last fall to keep them from seeding.  The park crew will apply Rodeo to the phragmites this spring.  Rodeo is a form of Round-Up that is safe for application around water.

Staff will check to see if the phragmites is near the Lake Huron Tansy.

9.         ACNA Members Terms

Mr. Garwood will look up the terms of office for the positions on the ACNA Commission and report back.
