Antrim County

News & Upcoming Events

***Media Release***

Antrim County has chosen a contractor for the demolition of the former First Merit Bank and adjoining Professional Building on the corner of Cayuga Street and Depot Street in Bellaire.  Dore and Associates, Inc. has been given the green light to begin the demolition process starting in September, 2019.

In a forward thinking move, the County purchased the property on which the building is located in May of 2017 for possible future expansion of facilities and parking.  “It is really the only parcel of property adjacent to the current facilities to come on the market over the last number of years.  The Board of Commissioners believed the purchase was a good idea for future planning,” said Ed Boettcher, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.

The building currently houses a law office on the west side of the building, while the east side of the building was the former home of First Merit Bank which later merged with, and took the name of Huntington Bank in late 2016.  Because Huntington Bank already had a location in Bellaire, south of town, they decided to sell the building on Depot Street.  The County purchased the property knowing they would later remove the building to accommodate future plans.

Fast forward to the winter of 2018-2019, and the plans for removal were accelerated due to water damage caused by late winter freezing and thawing that cycled over and over again, and eventually broke internal drain pipes and breached the roof.

The damage was extensive enough that the County’s insurance company allowed the County Board to choose between restoration and demolition.  The Board chose to accelerate their original plan to remove the building, which will be paid for by the insurance company.  The demolition should be completed by the end of October.  The Board of Commissioners have not reached consensus regarding future plans at this time.
